A Flat Roof Solar Solution for Net Zero Goals
Yorkshire Fire Station
Background
As part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards net zero, this Yorkshire-based fire station sought an effective solar energy solution. With significant energy demands and a focus on sustainability, the station aimed to offset its electricity consumption while ensuring a non-intrusive installation that maintained the structural integrity of the building.
The Challenge
Unlike standard pitched roof installations, the flat roof structure of the fire station required a specialised mounting system. Additionally, the presence of a large tower directly south of the site posed a shading challenge that could impact energy generation. The system needed to be carefully designed to maximise performance while avoiding structural penetrations that could compromise the roof’s integrity.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Grid Neutral installed a 25kW ballasted solar PV system, utilising 58 solar panels. The ballasted mounting system allowed for a secure installation without the need for penetrative fixtures, preserving the roof’s condition. Additionally, optimisers were integrated to mitigate the impact of shading from the nearby tower, ensuring maximum energy efficiency.
Results
With the newly installed system in place, the fire station is now generating clean, renewable energy, reducing reliance on grid electricity while making significant progress towards its net zero targets. The non-intrusive design ensures long-term durability, while the use of optimisers enhances overall energy performance despite shading challenges.
